Living the village

Ferries, buses, market, pharmacies and useful numbers. The practical guide for archipelago stays.

La Maddalena is not a stopover. It is the destination.

Most visitors spend in La Maddalena only the time needed to catch a ferry or board a tour. They are passing through. People staying in an apartment in the village centre have a very different experience: they know the breakfast bar, the time the small park near the harbour clears out, and the Wednesday market rhythm. It is a quality difference you cannot measure in stars.

How to get here

The main connection is the ferry from Palau, on the Gallura coast. Crossing time is around 20 minutes; services are frequent from June to September (every 30-60 minutes) and less frequent for the rest of the year. Main operators are Delcomar and Maddalena Lines — updated fares and schedules are on their official websites.

From Olbia (Olbia Costa Smeralda airport): about 45 minutes by car to Palau. From Alghero (Riviera del Corallo airport): around 2 hours.

In high season ferries also board cars, but on the island one is often unnecessary: the centre is walkable in 20 minutes, and for Caprera a bike or rental scooter is enough.

Getting around the island

Local buses connect central La Maddalena with main island areas (Spalmatore, Bassa Trinita, Guardia Vecchia). For Caprera, a dedicated route crosses Ponte della Liberta and reaches the main coves and the Garibaldi museum area.

Bike and scooter rental is available in several central points — Via Amendola and nearby side streets close to the harbour. For those who do not want to drive, taxi service runs all year; local radio-taxi number is posted in shops and bars.

Essential services

Pharmacies: two in the historic centre, with rotating night duty. The duty number is posted in each pharmacy window.

Out-of-hours medical service: active at night and on holidays. Office in the centre, reachable via the national number 116117.

Paolo Merlo Hospital: full-service structure with emergency room, located just behind the centre. For non-maritime emergencies this is the right reference; for emergencies at sea, contact the Harbour Master.

Banks and ATMs: two banks with ATM in the pedestrian centre. In high season Friday evening queues can be long; morning withdrawals are easier.

Supermarkets: two main stores in the centre (one also open Sunday morning in summer). Morning market in the square is excellent for fresh fruit, fish, and vegetables.

Postal services: post office on Via Nazionale, open Monday to Friday. For urgent shipping, private couriers use collection points in selected tobacconists.

Morning market

In early morning from June to September, La Maddalena’s main square hosts a compact market with local products: Gallura fruit, fresh small-scale catch, pecorino and ricotta, and a few artisan producers. Arrive between 7:30 and 9:00 for full selection; after 10:00, best fish is usually gone.

It is the best place to understand island seasonality and buy the right ingredients for lunch in your apartment.

Evening in the village

La Maddalena seafront is not postcard-only promenade: it is a living waterfront, with historic bars, artisan gelato shops, restaurants, and venues where music is not background noise. In summer, the evening walk from Piazza Umberto I to Cala Gavetta and back is the island’s social ritual — shared, slow, open.

The Madda apartment is in the city centre. No taxi needed to return at night.
