Island services

Supermarkets, duty pharmacies, ATMs, emergency contacts and WiFi: everything you need for a self-catering stay without surprises.

A reassuring premise

La Maddalena is not a remote island. It has everything needed for an independent stay: stocked supermarkets, always-available pharmacy coverage, a functioning hospital, ATMs, and 4G coverage across the main island. Visitors expecting only a harbour and a few bars discover instead a compact and well-organised town, with key services within roughly 500 metres of the port.

This guide is written for apartment guests who want to know exactly where things are — practical information, not poetic directions.

Supermarkets

The nearest supermarket is Dettori on Via Principe Amedeo 1, a short walk from Piazza Comando: open daily in season, with continuous midday hours. It is the main point for everyday shopping, with good fresh products, fruit, and local vegetables. On Via XX Settembre there is a smaller second supermarket, useful for quick top-ups. A small grocery open late (often until 22:00-23:00 in summer) is near Piazza Umberto I — ideal when you return from the boat and discover something is missing for dinner.

Harbour market (Tuesday-Saturday mornings in season): fresh landed fish, fruit and vegetables, local cheeses. For people cooking in apartments, this is the real supermarket. Arrive by 8:30; after 10:00 the best fish is usually sold out.

Pharmacy

Farmacia Dr Max Piazza Santa Maria Maddalena, 5/B is open daily with continuous summer schedule. Night and Sunday coverage rotates among island pharmacies — current duty pharmacy is posted on each pharmacy door and also listed on turnofarmacie.it using postal code 07024.

Hospital and emergency care

Paolo Merlo Hospital is on Via Ammiraglio Magnaghi, about 700 metres from the centre. It has a year-round emergency department, with reinforced staffing in summer. For non-critical urgencies, first-response care covers most common beach-holiday situations (cuts, stings, dehydration, digestive issues).

For major emergencies protocol includes helicopter transfer to Olbia hospital (Giovanni Paolo II): a well-established process that works. The key thing to know in advance is emergency number 118, and that calling before moving is always the right choice.

Out-of-hours medical service (outside emergency department hours): active in season, office in Via Giulio Cesare. Number is published by the municipality at season start and posted in public notice boards in the centre.

ATMs and payments

La Maddalena has several working ATMs:

- Banca di Sassari on Via Amendola (most central, near harbour) - Poste Italiane in Piazza Umberto I - Banco di Sardegna on Via XX Settembre

International debit and credit cards work at these machines. Card payments are accepted by shops, restaurants, and tourism operators. Keeping some cash is still useful for market stalls, some bike rentals, and taxis.

Connectivity: phone and WiFi

5G coverage on La Maddalena is expanding, as typical in Sardinian coastal and tourism areas. 4G is widely available, while 5G can still be partial and mainly concentrated in urban and harbour zones, varying by operator.

WiFi in Isola, Madda, and Lena apartments is included in the stay. For remote work: connection quality is suitable for video calls and professional use. In August, some evening slots may see mobile-network slowdowns due to load; for important calls, apartment WiFi is usually more reliable than mobile data.

Sailing services

Visitors coming to La Maddalena to sail find a complete chain: sailing schools, day sails on classic yachts, nautical bases for mooring, and skipper-rental operators. Practical rule: in July and August, book at least 48-72 hours ahead, especially for day trips toward Spargi, Budelli, and Santa Maria.

Schools and training

- Centro Velico Caprera (Stagnali/Punta Coda): historical reference for beginner, advanced, and regatta courses. - Club Nautico La Maddalena (Loc. Ricciolina): training activity and club environment for continuity. - Associazione Acque Libere (Via Ammiraglio Mirabello): local school with practical setup. - VelamareClub - Base Nautica Sardegna (Abbatoggia) and Centro Nautico di Levante (Capo d'Orso area): useful options for movement between La Maddalena and Palau.

Sailing day trips

- Veliero Helena, Fil Rouge Sail, Veliero Dolce Vita, Velieri Valentina, JOY Sailing, Leonidas, Veliero Francesca 1955: very active operators in the archipelago, typically full-day format with swim stops. - Sea Passion catamaran sailing tours: catamaran option for groups and more stable itineraries in stronger wind.

Moorings and nautical bases

- Porto Cala Mangiavolpe, Cala Gavetta, and Marina di Punta Nera: three main points to evaluate for transit and dock services. - For private boats or charter in high season: request berths well in advance and reconfirm by phone the day before arrival.

Land support

- Lega Navale Italiana - Sezione La Maddalena: local reference for maritime culture and network. - Veleria Il Ponente Store: useful for light technical clothing and accessories.

Practical note: schedules, phone numbers, and availability change quickly in season. Before departure, always check official website or direct contact.
